2009 All-MIAA Volleyball Team Announced

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Six players each from MIAA Champion Central Missouri, Emporia State and Pittsburg State headline the 2009 All-MIAA Volleyball Team, released Wednesday by the conference office. The selections were made by the league's 11 head coaches, and coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
 
Pittsburg State outside hitter Pamela Cartagena was named the 2009 MIAA Player of the Year after ranking second in the league in kills (3.97 per set), ninth in digs (4.41 per set) and second in points (4.39 per set). The senior from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was also one of two unanimous All-MIAA First Team selections, with Emporia State senior outside hitter Arica Shepard being the other.
 
Truman middle hitter Megan Sharpe was selected as the 2009 MIAA Freshman of the Year after finishing third in the conference in hitting percentage (.357), 10th in blocks (0.85 per set) and eighth in points (3.61 per set). The Edwardsville, Ill., native was also named All-MIAA Second Team.
 
Central Missouri first-year head coach Flip Piontek was voted unanimous 2009 MIAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Jennies to an 18-2 record in MIAA play (32-4 overall) and their first conference championship since 2000. Central Missouri now has 20 conference titles in 28 years of MIAA competition.
 
Truman and Washburn both had five all-conference selections, followed by Nebraska-Omaha with four, Northwest Missouri and Southwest Baptist with three, Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern with two and Missouri Western with one.
 
Central Missouri is set to host the NCAA South Central Regional Thursday through Saturday as the No. 1 seed. The Jennies will take on No. 8 seed Dallas Baptist in the first round Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CT.  No. 2 seed Washburn will face No. 7 seed Nebraska-Omaha Thursday at 2:30 p.m. CT, No. 4 seed Emporia State will play No. 5 seed Pittsburg State Thursday at 5 p.m. CT and No. 6 seed Truman will match up with No. 3 seed West Texas A&M Thursday at noon CT in the other first round matches.
