SBU Sweeps Tennis Player of the Week Honors
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Domingos Carissimo and
Faiga Schmidt of Southwest Baptist have been named MIAA Tennis
Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 22-28 as
selected by a conference SID panel. Carissimo and Schmidt are both
first-time honorees in 2010.
MIAA MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Domingos Carissimo, Fr., Southwest Baptist
Carissimo went a combined 10-2 in singles and doubles competition
during the week. The freshman from Ponte Nove, Brazil, had straight
set victories in four of his singles wins. He played his first
doubles match of the week at No. 2 and won with Brandon Finerty
before moving to the No. 1 SBU doubles with Marton Zsiga.
Carissimo’s only doubles loss was a 9-7 setback at Washburn,
playing with Zsiga. Carissimo’s only singles loss was at
Division I Missouri-Kansas City, a three-set loss at No. 2
singles.
MIAA WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Faiga Schmidt, Fr., Southwest Baptist
Schmidt went 4-1 at No. 3 singles during the spring break week
trip. The freshman from Nova Humburgo, Brazil, also went 3-2 at No.
1 doubles with partner Jolee Cook. Schmidt won in straight sets in
four of her five singles matches. Her only loss was a three-set
loss to Truman’s Kelsey Kuykendall. After dropping their
first two doubles matches at No. 1, Schmidt and Cook rallied to win
their last three of the week to help the Bearcats improve to 5-3
overall on the season.
