Lady Blues, Bearcats Fall in Opening Round

ABILENE, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues tennis team fell to host and No. 1 seed Abilene Christian (Texas), 5-0, in NCAA Division II South Central Region action Thursday afternoon (May 7) at the Eager Tennis Center..

The Lady Blues came into the regional as the No. 8 seed and finish the season with a 15-4 record.

WU lost all three doubles matches, winning just six games during the doubles competition. Abilene Christian secured singles wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to finish out the victory.

Northeastern (Okla.) State 5, NWMSU 0

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats were eliminated from the NCAA Division II with a 5-0 setback to Northeastern (Okla.) State Thursday (May 7) at the Bobcat Tennis Complex on the campus of Texas State University.

The Bearcats (16-6) dropped all three doubles flights, but the RiverHawks (19-4) needed a tiebreaker win to claim No. 3. Senior Lina Gomez and freshman Allison Wulff pushed Agata Skorupska and Claire Chanay before falling in the tiebreaker, 7-5.

Senior Jordan Lipira held the only Northwest lead at No. 3 singles when play ended. The RiverHawks earned straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to advance to Friday's second-round match with St. Edward's (Texas).
