Southern Knocks Off Truman in Overtime, 2-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Megan Stueve scored a goal in the 90th minute to send the game into overtime, and Shannon Kuhn scored on a header in OT to give No. 3 seed Missouri Southern a 2-1 victory over No. 2 seed Truman in game three of the 2011 MIAA Soccer Championship Friday afternoon at Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium on the campus of UMKC.

Truman got on the board first in the opening half when Megan Buri fired an unassisted goal past Missouri Southern goalkeeper Randi Russell in the 24th minute to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.

Truman held the 1-0 advantage into the 90th minute, when Stueve took a pass from Corrine Tebbs and slipped the ball past a diving Jayne Grisham to even the score at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.

In overtime, Truman had three shots on goal in the first five minutes, but Southern goalkeeper Abby Risner made three tough saves to extend the game.

In the 96th minute, Kuhn hit a header into the net off of a corner kick from Tebbs to give Missouri Southern the golden goal and the victory in overtime.

Truman outshot Missouri Southern on the afternoon, 18-7, including an 8-3 advantage on shots on goal.

With the win, Missouri Southern (9-9-1) advances to the championship game to face the winner of Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri on Sunday at 1 p.m. Truman closes its season with an 11-6-2 record.
