Calgaard Scores Twice as NWMSU Defeats ESU
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Anna Calgaard scored two goals to lead No. 4 seed Northwest Missouri to a 4-2 victory over No. 5 seed Emporia State in game two of the 2011 MIAA Soccer Championship Thursday night at Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium on the campus of UMKC.
Victoria Von Mende got things started for Northwest Missouri (10-6-2) in the 18th minute, scoring her 11th goal of the season to put the Bearcats up 1-0.
With 33 minutes to go in the second half, Amanda Bundrant centered the ball to Emilee Davison, who scored to put Northwest up 2-0.
Calgaard extended the Northwest lead to 3-0 with her first goal of the game goal on a free kick in the 64th minute.
Emporia State's Jessica Decker closed the gap to 3-1 in the 66th minute with her second goal of the season, assisted by Mindi Lozenski.
Calgaard extended the Northwest lead back to three at 4-1 with a header off of a corner kick by Jacque Dedovesh in the 73rd minute.
Emporia State's Sarah Anderson scored the final goal of the game, a header in the 83rd minute to provide the final margin of 4-2.
Northwest Missouri outshot Emporia State, 12-6. ESU's Nikki Schmitz had four saves on the night, while NWMSU's Kelsey Adams had two.
Northwest Missouri advances to face top seed Central Missouri in the semifinals Friday at 4 p.m. Emporia State finishes the season with a 3-10-5 record.
