Mavs Climb to Fifth at Women's Golf Regional


Suponchick's 79 in windy conditions leads the way for UNO

OMAHA, Neb. ­ Nebraska-Omaha moved up to fifth place after two days of competition at the NCAA Division II West Women's Golf Regional at Ironwood Golf and Country Club Tuesday (May 5). 

 

Sophomore Dani Suponchick shot a team-best 79 in windy conditions to lead the Mavericks.  Just 11 strokes separate the top five teams in the nine-team tournament heading into the final round Wednesday (May 6).

The top three teams and the top three individuals will advance to the national championship in Findlay, Ohio, next week.

Tarleton (Texas) State remained in the lead with a two-day team total of 642, just five strokes ahead of Western Washington (647) which tied with California State-Chico for low team round of the day at 323.  West Texas A&M is in third with a score of 649 followed by Cal State-Chico (650) and UNO (653).

Carla Cooper of Tarleton State is tied with Raelyn Smith of Angelo (Texas) State for first overall with a two-day score of 151.  Smith, playing as an individual, shot 78 on Tuesday after shooting the low round of the tournament on Monday at 73.

Junior Erin Ommen has the best two-day score for the Mavericks at 157.  She and Suponchick were sharp on the front side, going out in even par 36.  Ommen shot 44 on the back side to finish with 80 while Suponchick came in at 43 and has a two-day total of 161. 

Sophomore Amy Powell is third for the Mavs at 166 after an 82 on Tuesday.  Junior Abbey Weddle was in fourth (86-84-170), and freshman Rebecca Pollock was fifth (85-88-173).

The final round of the regional begins at 8:30 a.m., CDT, from the first tee at Ironwood.
