Emporia State Punches Ticket to St. Joseph
CANYON, Texas (ESU Media Relations) -- Emporia
State held Northeastern State to .270 shooting from the field in a
76-45 romp in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional
Championship Game to advance to the Elite Eight for the fifth time
in school history. Tournament MVP Cassondra Boston had 11
points, seven assists and five rebounds to lead four Lady Hornets
in double figures.
Jasmine Webb tied the game at 8-8 with 14:22 left in the first
half when ESU went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-8 lead with 9:31 left
in the half. All-Tournament team player Sophia Lenard had
five points during the run that would eventually reach 16-2 on a
pair of Brittney Miller free throws with 6:24 left in the half.
After taking a 30-17 lead into the break, Miller and Lacy Corker
hit back to back three pointers in the first minute of the second
half and give the Lady Hornets a 19 point lead. The
RiverHawks responded with an old fashioned three point play from
Alix Perkins and a three pointer from Tosha Tyler to cut the lead
to 13 with 17:49 remaining when ESU delivered the knock out blow.
Jamie Augustyn hit back to back three pointers to ignite a
10-0 run that would grow to 17-2 as the Lady Hornets took a
commanding 53-25 lead with 13:38 left in the game. The lead
would grow to 35 at 70-35 with 3:59 remaining before ESU settled
for the 31 point win, the largest margin of victory in a South
Central Regional Title game since the Lady Hornets defeated
Southwest Baptist 96-59 in 2000.
Lenard, Augustyn and Miller all scored 12 points to join Boston in
double figures. Jocelyn Cummings had a game high eight
rebounds for the Lady Hornets, while Alli Volkens added eight
points and six rebounds.
The Lady Hornets will play either Michigan Tech or Drury in the
Elite Eight on Tuesday, March 23 at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph,
Mo. Tip-off is tentatively scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
