Boston Voted Regional Player of the Year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Emporia State senior guard Cassandra Boston earned the Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year award to headline the all-region women’s basketball team, released Thursday.
Boston highlights the first team, which includes two players from the MIAA and three from the Lone Star Conference. Boston is joined on the first team by fellow MIAA standout Dayna Rodriguez of Washburn. Representing the LSC are West Texas A&M junior guard Joni Unruh and sophomore forward Jamie Simmons, as well as Abilene Christian senior forward Jamie Meyer.
Boston, a senior from Des Moines, Iowa, was a unanimous All-MIAA First Team selection this season and was voted the league’s Player of the Year after leading the MIAA in scoring with 19.4 points per game and finishing third in assists with 3.9 assists per game. Boston led Emporia State to a 24-5 regular-season record and the No. 4 seed in this week’s NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament in Canyon, Texas. Boston, a second team all-region selection last year, is the only one of the 10 players on this year’s team that was voted all-region in 2009.
Rodriguez, a senior from Havana, Cuba, led Washburn to its sixth MIAA tournament championship in the last eight years last week as the Lady Blues topped Central Missouri in the title game. Rodriguez was voted to the all-tournament team as Washburn earned the No. 2 seed in this week’s regional tournament. She averaged a team-best 15.0 points this season and is second on the team in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game.
The five players selected to the first team are eligible for the 2010 Daktronics All-America women’s basketball team that will be voted on next week.
Fort Hays State senior guard Naomi Bancroft was named to the all-region second team.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world
