ESU Softball Falls to Midwestern State, 1-0
Wichita Falls, Texas (ESU Media Relations) -- Karley Schmelzer extended her string of innings without an earned run to 29.0 straight, but an unearned run in the top of the seventh gave #5 Midwestern State a 1-0 victory over #17 Emporia State at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional-1 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Schmelzer and Mustang pitcher Brittney Tanner hooked up in a pitchers duel for most of the game. Schmelzer scattered six hits and one walk over 7.0 innings while Tanner allowed just two hits and a walk, taking a no hitter into the fourth inning.
MSU was able to score the game winning run in the top of the seventh without the benefit of a hit. Amanda Potsyman led off by getting to second on a throwing error by ESU third baseman Taylor Riechard. She went to third on a ground out and scored on McKenzie Sickler's sacrifice fly.
A double from Angela Mahan to lead off the fourth and a single from Katie Huffmann to lead off the fifth were the only hits ESU could muster against the Lone Star Conference North Division Pitcher of the Year. With the double, Mahan moved to 17th in NCAA Division II history in career two baggers.
At 4 p.m. Saturday, the Hornets will take on the winner of the game between Angelo State and Texas A&M-International to try and earn a rematch with Midwestern State in the regional championship game.
