Hukill, Yates Lead Nebraska-Omaha to Win
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (UNO Media Relations) -- Treightin Yates hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to give Nebraska-Omaha a 7-6 win Saturday over West Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Mavericks (50-11) advance to play fifth-ranked and top-seeded Midwestern State in the next game, set to follow at 2:40 p.m.
The 21st-ranked Mavericks, seeded fourth in the NCAA South Central Region, overcame a 4-0 deficit and took the lead thanks to a pair of home runs from Alli Hukill. She now has 14 on the year to move into a tie for third in UNO single-season history.
Katelyn Hinton led off the ninth inning with a single and then stole second. Yates then singled up the middle and Hinton was sent home. The throw came in from center and she slid around the tag for the winning run.
After falling behind, 5-4 the 22nd-ranked Lady Buffs retook the lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run from Kimberly LeComte.
Yates' RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth tied it and then a scoreless seventh sent the game into extra innings.
The game featured three lead changes and a tie.
Hukill gave the Mavs the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with her second home run of the game. Julia Krejci reached on an error to lead off that inning and Lindsay Redding replaced her on the base path. Emma Wright then walked before Hukill hit a blast to center field.
Maverick starter Beth Haley got chased in the first inning before she recorded an out. The Lady Buffs scored four runs off three hits and an error before Lindsey Slocum entered in relief.
UNO cut West Texas A&M's 4-0 lead in half with Hukill's first blast in the bottom of the second, scoring Wright who reached after getting hit by a pitch.
Slocum improved to 21-2 with the win as she allowed two runs off six hits. She struck out 13, a season high for UNO.
West Texas A&M was making its first trip to the NCAA tournament. The Mustangs, the host team, beat St. Mary's (Texas), 2-1 in its first round game to move on to play UNO.
