MSSU Women Place Third at NCAA Championships
Missouri Southerns womens cross country team finished third at the 2009 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships Saturday, the highest finish in team history, to lead all MIAA teams at the USI Cross Country Course.

Southern Coaches, Shank Win Regional Awards
Missouri Southern cross country coaches Tom Rutledge and Patty Vavra were named Regional Coaches of the Year, while senior Kimi Shank was named Regional Athlete of the Year as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its regional awards.

Missouri Southern Sweeps Regional XC Titles
Missouri Southern swept the team titles at the 2009 NCAA Division II Cross Country South Central Regional at Abilene Christian University to advance to the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. It was the third regional title for the Southern women and the second title in the last three years for the MSSU men.

Pierce, SBU Hope to Qualify for Nationals
In the last few yards of the MIAA cross country championships on Oct. 24, Southwest Baptist senior Michael Pierce mentally slowed down to enjoy the moment. Pierce, a graduate of Oak Park High School in Gladstone, Mo., was comfortably ahead in his last conference meet. He was finally going to achieve a goal of finishing first in the MIAA championship meet.

Missouri Southerns Tom Rutledge and Patty Vavra have been selected as MIAA Mens and Womens Cross Country Coaches of the Year, respectively, by league coaches.

MSSU Sweeps MIAA Cross Country Titles
Kimi Shank won her second straight individual championship to lead Missouri Southern to a dominating team win in the 2009 MIAA Womens Cross Country Championships at Jones Park in Emporia. Southern outscored runner-up Truman by 39 points on the way to their fourth straight conference title.

Sophomore Adam McGovern has emerged as one of the top runners at Emporia State, and that only enhances the Hornets shot at finishing in the upper half of the MIAA cross country meet on Saturday.

Emporia States Adam McGovern and Katie Mona have been named MIAA Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 17 as selected by a conference SID panel. McGovern wins for the second time this season, while Mona is honored for the first time.

Mujahid Hassaballa (Pittsburg State) and Kimi Shank (Missouri Southern) have been named MIAA Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 10 as selected by a conference SID panel. The honor is Shank's third conference award of the year, while Hassaballa is a first-time winner this season.

Adam McGovern (Emporia State) and Ashley Siler (Missouri Southern) have been named MIAA Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 2-3 as selected by a conference SID panel. McGovern and Siler both earn the honor for the first time this season.

Michael Pierce (Southwest Baptist) and Dani DellOrco (Truman) have been named MIAA Cross Country Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 25-26 as selected by a conference SID panel. Pierce picks up the honor for the second consecutive week, while DellOrco is a first-time winner this season.

MSSU, SBU Top Cross Country Preseason Polls
Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist, the defending MIAA champions in women's and men's cross country, respectfully, were voted as the two preseason number ones in the 2009 MIAA coaches polls, the league office announced Friday.
