MIAA Has Nine Earn Track/XC Academic All-District


Two men, two women gain first team recognition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The MIAA had nine student-athletes -- four men and five women -- gain ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District VII recognition, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and released Thursday (June 4).

Two men and two women -- seniors Jon Garrett and Venessa Lee of Pittsburg State and juniors Michael McCampbell and Courtney Ayers of Southwest Baptist -- were first-team selections and are now eligible to be selected to the Academic All-America Team.

 

Garrett, a native of Lansing, Kan., has a 4.00 grade-point average as an accounting and finance double major. He placed fifth in the indoor mile and fifth in the outdoor 1500 meters in the 2009 MIAA Championships, and helped the Gorillas qualify for nationals in cross country.

 

Lee, a finalist for the Ken B. Jones Award as MIAA Student-Athlete of the Year, was nominated with a 3.89 GPA as a biology (pre-medicine)/Spanish double major. The Cleveland, Mo., product placed third in the 800 meters at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Division II Championships and was 64th at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship.

 

McCampbell earned his honor with a 4.00 GPA as a biology major. The Marshall, Mo., native placed eighth at the MIAA Cross Country Championship to earn All-MIAA honors and was 30th in the NCAA Division II Cross Country South Central Regional.

 

Ayers, of Maryland Heights, Mo., was selected with a 4.00 GPA as a Christian ministries major at SBU. She placed third at the MIAA Cross Country Championships and 10th in the regional race. On the track, she picked up All-MIAA honors with a third-place clocking in the 10,000 meters at the conference outdoor meet.

Those earning second-team recognition include PSU sophomores Mike Beeler (3.80 -- chemistry) and Brittney Graff (4.00 -- nursing), Missouri Southern juniors Ciara Lipsey (3.95 -- marketing & management) and Kimi Shank (3.95 -- health promotion & wellness) along with SBU senior Vince Tichenor (3.95 -- biology/chemistry).

College Division of District VII includes all NCAA Division II and III schools as well as NAIA-member institutions and junior colleges in the states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Also included are all colleges and universities in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
