NCAA Indoor Championships Underway
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Action at the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships is underway at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. Several MIAA athletes are making headlines early, including two individual national champions.
Truman senior Katrina Biermann took home the individual title in the women's pole vault after jumping 13-1 feet and winning the tiebreaker. Minnesota State-Mankato’s Lauren Stelten also posted a height of 13-1 feet, but finished second behind Biermann.
Fort Hays State senior senior Darcie Schmitz won the championship in the women’s long jump with a new school-record leap of 19-9 1/2 feet, defeating second-place finisher Racquel Anderson of Lincoln (Mo.) by a half inch.
Darius Walker of Central Missouri leads the men’s heptathlon through four events. Walker has posted event bests in the 60 meters (6.97) and high jump (tied, 1.95 meters) and currently has 3,069 points, 124 points more than second place Carsten Krohn of Ashland.
Nebraska-Omaha’s Anja Puc recorded a time of 2:13.50 in
the 800 meters to advance to Saturday's finals.
