2010 All-MIAA Men's Tennis Team Announced
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five singles players
and one doubles duo from 2010 MIAA men's tennis regular
season co-champion and tournament champion Northwest Missouri were
named All-MIAA First Team to highlight the all-conference team
released Thursday by the league office. The selections were made by
the league's six head coaches, and coaches were not permitted to
vote for their own players.
Northwest Missouri junior Malcolm Harrison is the 2010 MIAA Player
of the Year after a season in which he went 21-3 at No. 1 singles
and 18-7 at No. 1 doubles. The Kansas City, Mo., product went 4-0
combined at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles at the MIAA Men's
Tennis Championship, helping Northwest Missouri claim the title. He
was also named All-MIAA First Team at No. 1 singles along with
Southwest Baptist senior Marton Zsiga and Washburn senior Branden
Joost. Harrison was All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 1
doubles.
Southwest Baptist's Domingos Carissimo was named the 2010
MIAA Freshman of the Year. The Ponte Nova, Brazil, native went 14-3
at No. 2 singles and 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, including 5-0 and 4-1,
respectfully, in conference play. Carissimo earned All-MIAA First
Team honors at No. 2 singles and All-MIAA Second Team at No. 1
doubles.
Northwest Missouri head coach Mark Rosewell was selected as the
MIAA Coach of the Year for the seventh time in men's tennis
after guiding the Bearcats to a 4-1 league record (21-4 overall), a
share of the regular season conference title and the MIAA
tournament championship.
Emporia State senior Kevin Schoon was voted as the Sportsmanship
Award winner for the second year in a row.
MIAA regular season co-champion Washburn had the second-most first
team selections with five (one singles player, two doubles teams),
followed by MIAA regular season co-champion Southwest Baptist with
two (two singles players).
Northwest Missouri and Washburn have earned spots in the NCAA
Division II Tournament. The Bearcats will face Cameron May 6 in the
first round of the South Central Region #1 preliminary tournament
(hosted by St. Edward's), and Washburn will play Incarnate
Word May 6 in the opening round of the South Central Region #2
preliminary tournament (hosted by Abilene Christian).
