Three Earn Tennis Player of the Week Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Marton Zsiga (Southwest Baptist), Alyssa Castillo (Washburn) and Jolee Cook (Southwest Baptist) have been named MIAA Tennis Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 29-April 4, as selected by a conference SID panel. Zsiga, Castillo and Cook are all first-time honorees in 2010.
 
MIAA MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Marton Zsiga, Sr., Southwest Baptist
Zsiga went 4-0 combined in singles and doubles action as SBU picked up two MIAA wins. The senior from Szeged, Hungary, handed previously unbeaten Malcolm Harrison of NWMSU his first singles loss of the season with a three-set win Thursday. Zsiga defeated UNO’s Drew Mercier in a third-set super tiebreaker with the match already in hand. Zsiga now stands at 13-4 in singles play on the season, and 6-1 in doubles since being paired with Domingos Carissimo.

MIAA WOMEN’S TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Alyssa Castillo, So., Washburn
Castillo went a combined 4-0 for the week, winning both matches at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles. At No. 1 doubles, the sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, teamed with Trang Le Nguyen to top Rockhurst’s Erin Bales and Mauren Rielley 8-2, and then topped Truman’s Amy Ochs and Ellen Russell 8-3. In singles play, Castillo beat the Hawks’ Karsyn Betts 6-1, 6-3 and then topped Truman’s Dagmar Velez 6-3, 6-1 to complete her perfect 4-0 week.
 
Jolee Cook, Sr., Southwest Baptist
Cook went a combined 7-0 during the week as SBU went 3-1 against a quartet of MIAA teams. In singles play, three of her four wins were in straight sets, and she also won a three-set thriller over Traci Moklestad of UNO. Cook, a senior from Rowlett, Texas, picked up three doubles wins with Faiga Schmidt. SBU did not play doubles matches with FHSU due to rain. Cook is now 9-4 in singles play at No. 1 for SBU and 8-4 in doubles.
