Mules Finish 14th at NCAA-II Men's Golf Championship

UCM's Yoder, WU's Ewald card top-25 finishes; both are first-team All-America

BLAINE, Wash. -- The Central Missouri Mules improved to 14th following the final round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship at Loomis Trail Golf Club Friday afternoon (May 22).

 

 

Both UCM junior Justin Yoder and Washburn senior Matt Ewald carded top-25 scores and were announced as earning first-team honors on the Golf Coaches Association of America/PING Division II All-America Team.

The Mules had a final round four-man score of 306 for a four-day score of 1222. UCM was 43 shots behind the leaders -- Sonoma (Calif.) State and California State-San Bernardino. Sonoma State earned the national championship on the first playoff hole.

Yoder was the only Mule to break par during the four days in the tournament, as he recorded a one-under 70 to finish in a tie for ninth place at nine-over par 293. After logging two birdies and two bogeys during his first nine holes on the day, Yoder was even on eight of his final nine with a birdie on the par-three sixth hole.

The Ichabods' Ewald -- playing as a medalist -- was two shots behind Yoder in a tie for 14th with an 11-over 295 after wrapping up his final round with a three-over 74. He opened with a double-bogey on the 10th hole -- his first of the day -- and wrapped up his first nine at three-over before completing the round at even par.

Sophomore Matt Miller also logged his best 18 holes of the championship with a one-over 72 and finished the tournament at 15-over par with a 299.

Junior Jon Wrast had another 14-over 85 and finished at 31-over 315 for the week. Freshman Jared King and senior Ty Needels each wrapped up with 11-over 82s -- King had a 40-over 324 while Needels carded a 47-over 331.

Gavin Smith of Indiana (Pa.) defeated Ferris (Mich.) State's Kelbi Lee with a birdie on the first playoff hole -- each finished with 289 scores through 72 holes.
