Watts Selected as Regional Player of the Year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Central Missouri senior
forward Sanijay Watts was voted the Daktronics South Central Region
Player of the Year and is just one of two repeat first team
all-region selections from last season on this year’s first
team, released Wednesday. He joins last season’s Player of
the Year, Matt Rogers of Southwest Baptist, as the two repeat
honorees to go along with newcomers LaMarshall Corbett of Angelo
State, Central Oklahoma’s Daunte Williams and UCM teammate
Alex Moosmann.
Watts, a native of St. Louis, Mo., led the MIAA in both scoring
and rebounding on the season, averaging 21.5 points and 9.7
rebounds per game. He led the league with 15 double-doubles on the
season and was named MIAA Player of the Week on four different
occasions. Watts became just the eighth two-year player to pass
1,000 career points in school history. Watts also earned MIAA
Player of the Year honors.
Rogers, a senior center for the Bearcats, earns his second
consecutive first team honor after playing 20 games before
suffering a season-ending injury. The Doniphan, Mo., native ranked
among national and MIAA leaders in scoring, rebounding and blocks
before the injury. He had recorded a season’s best 36 points
and 20 rebounds against Nebraska-Omaha and earned MIAA Player of
Week honors three times this season.
Moosmann, a senior point guard for UCM, was named an All-MIAA
First Team selection after ranking among the top 10 in seven
offensive categories. He led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio
at 4.8 (105-to-122) this season. The Washington, Mo., native led
the MIAA in three-point percentage (.470) and ranked ninth in
scoring (15.5 ppg).
Watts, Rogers, Moosmann and the others selected to the first-team
are eligible for the 2010 Daktronics All-America Men’s
Basketball Team that will be voted upon next week.
Nebraska-Omaha junior guard Tyler Bullock earned Daktronics Second
Team All-South Central Region honors.
The team is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. Voting for the all-region and All-American teams is powered by ATHLETICSITE.COM.
