Chuck Broyles Outlines Retirement Plans
PITTSBURG, Kan. (PSU Media Relations) -- For 46 years, Chuck Broyles has been part of Pittsburg State University in roles that have included student, athlete, assistant coach, coach and athletic director. Today he told the staff in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics about his plans to begin phased retirement and transition into yet one more role, assistant to the president.
Broyles said he has been talking about this with President Steve Scott for many months.
"I love this university and I want to be able to serve in whatever way I can as I move closer to retirement," Broyles said.
"Chuck clearly wants to continue to contribute and we certainly don't want to lose someone who has so much to offer students, alumni and the university," Scott said. "Phased retirement is a good option that allows Chuck to continue to serve the university he loves while at the same time begin to enjoy life a little more."
Broyles opted for a three-year phased retirement plan at 50 percent assignment for university employees who are at least 55 and who have completed 10 years of service.
Broyles will continue to serve as athletic director until a replacement has been named sometime over the next several months. In his new role as assistant to the president, Broyles said, he will help the new AD get off to a good start. Once the new AD is in place, Broyles will assist that person with marketing and sales of east side skyboxes and will oversee the development of Hall of Fame space in the Weede P.E. Building. Broyles will also serve as the key contact with football lettermen, strengthening their relationships with the university and expanding their support for our athletics programs. Additionally, he will teach courses in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, where the need exists.
"Each part of my life at Pittsburg State has been special for me," Broyles said, "whether as a student, a football player or as a coach. Each offered unique challenges and benefits and I'm sure the days ahead will be no different. In many ways, this is just the closing of one chapter, but the beginning of a new one for me."
Pittsburg State University alumnus Kendall Gammon, former NFL All-Star and Pro Bowl player, will lead the search for a new athletic director. President Scott said he expected to search to be complete and a new AD to be in place by early September.
The president said the campus will celebrate "Chuck Broyles Day" to recognize Broyles' contributions to the university and to NCAA Division II football. The celebration will most likely take place on a football game day early in the fall, he said.
"We expect that there will be many, many people who will want to be a part of honoring Chuck and recognizing his many contributions," Scott said.
