Omaha, Western to Play in Postseason Bowls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Nebraska-Omaha will travel to Topeka, Kan., on Dec. 5 to play Lone Star Conference (LSC) representative West Texas A&M in the Kanza Bowl, and Missouri Western will take on Augustana (S.D.) of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) in the Mineral Water Bowl Dec. 5 in Excelsior Springs, Mo., the MIAA office announced.

Nebraska-Omaha and Missouri Western were part of a four-way tie for second place in the league standings at 6-3 in conference games. Washburn and Central Missouri were the other two teams tied for second. Each team's record against the other three schools in the tiebreaker was evaluated to help determine bowl participants. UNO and MWSU were both 2-1 against the other three teams, while WU and UCM were 1-2. Nebraska-Omaha had the first choice of bowls based on its head-to-head win over Missouri Western this past Saturday.

This season will be the inaugural Kanza Bowl between the MIAA and LSC. The game will be the first-ever meeting between Nebraska-Omaha and West Texas A&M. Both teams have enjoyed recent postseason success, with a combined eight NCAA Division II playoff appearances in the last four years. In 2008, UNO lost in the first round to conference foe Pittsburg State, 33-21. West Texas A&M lost in the second round to conference opponent Abilene Christian, 93-68, in a highly publicized game where several DII playoff records were broken.

This will be the 10th year for the Mineral Water Bowl as a Division II football game. This year's game will feature a rematch of the 2008 game, which Augustana (S.D.) won 37-16 over Missouri Western. For the last nine years, the bowl has featured an MIAA team against a representative from the NSIC. The MIAA is 7-2 in Mineral Water Bowl games against the NSIC, with the NSIC winning last season as well as the first game in 2000. Missouri Western has played in five of the nine games with a 3-2 record. Missouri Western and Augustana also met in the regular season in 1980, a game that ended in a 22-22 tie.
