A chuckle came out and then Northwest Missouri football coach Mel Tjeerdsma quickly corrected any assumption that his program doesn’t have to work hard on recruiting because of its 2009 NCAA Division II championship.

Svoboda Named Central Missouri Football Coach
Central Missouri announced today that Jim Svoboda (Suh-BOW-duh) will be the 28th Head Football Coach in the 115-year history of the program. Athletic Director Jerry Hughes will officially introduce him at a press conference in the UCM Multipurpose Building Alumni Room on Tuesday, January 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Tjeerdsma Named Division II Coach of the Year
Northwest Missouri State head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma was announced as the 2009 Liberty Mutual Division II Coach of the Year in a ceremony Wednesday in Newport Beach, Calif. This marks the first Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year honor for Tjeerdsma, who has been national coach of the year by the American Football Coaches three times (1998, 1999 and 2008).

Ultimate Goal Within Northwest Missouri's Grasp
Two days after losing their fourth straight heartbreaker in the NCAA Division II football championship game, offensive coordinator Adam Dorrel walked into a coaches meeting in a somber mood. Soy, Grozinger Headline Daktronics All-Americans
Six players from MIAA schools were selected to the 2009 Daktronics, Inc. Division II All-America Football Team, it was announced Tuesday. Northwest Missouri leads the way with a league-high four All-Americans, including two first teamers in sophomore wide receiver Jake Soy and junior offensive lineman Brett Grozinger.

Truman State University Director of Athletics Jerry Wollmering has announced that former Bulldog standout Gregg Nesbitt has been named the football program's next head coach. Coach Nesbitt was introduced to the media, Truman faculty and staff and Kirksville community Monday morning in Truman's Student Union Building, Georgian Room C.

Northwest Missouri Rolls to Return to Florence
Once again Northwest Missouri is Alabama-bound. Northwest Missouri earned its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II championship by thrashing California (Pa.) 56-31 Saturday evening at Bearcat Stadium. It was a history-making performance. Northwest Missouri is the first Division II to reach the title game five straight times.

Missouri Western Wins Mineral Water Bowl
The Missouri Western football team revenged last year’s 37-16 Mineral Water Bowl loss to the Augustana College by defeating the Vikings 34-21 in this year's bowl game. With the victory the Griffons improve to 5-2 all-time in Mineral Water Bowl games. Western finished the season with a 9-3 overall record.

Nebraska-Omaha Falls Short in Kanza Bowl
The University of Nebraska at Omaha football ended its 2009 season with a loss to West Texas A&M at the Kanza Bowl Saturday afternoon at Hummer Sports Park, 31-25. The Mavs trailed 10-9 after the half, but took the lead in the opening second of the second half when linebacker Kyle Moore stepped in front of a Taylor Harris pass and for a pick six. Greg Zuerlein put the Mavs up 16-10 with the PAT.

In one respect, Northwest Missouri State didn’t play up to its playoff-caliber sharpness. The Bearcats committed a season-high four turnovers against Abilene Christian. But Northwest Missouri is so good that those miscues didn’t prevent it from hammering Abilene Christian 35-10 in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Stadium.

Nine members of Northwest Missouri’s 2009 MIAA Football Championship team earned spots on the All-MIAA First Team to headline the all-conference team released by the league office Tuesday. Northwest Missouri teammates Blake Bolles and Chad Kilgore and Washburn’s Michael Krajicek have been named MIAA Football Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 7 as selected by a conference SID panel. Bolles finishes 2009 with two MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Kilgore and Krajicek both win their first awards of the year in the final football student-athlete of the week vote of the season.

Northwest to Represent MIAA in DII Playoffs
After finishing off its fourth consecutive perfect conference season and league championship, Northwest Missouri will now represent the MIAA in the 2009 NCAA Division II Playoffs. The bracket was unveiled Sunday afternoon, and the Bearcats received a first-round bye with the No. 2 seed in Super Region Four. They will face the winner of No. 3-seed Midwestern State and No. 6-seed Abilene Christian in the second round Nov. 21 at home in Maryville, Mo.

Dane Simoneau (Washburn), C.J. MIAA Football Wrap: Week Eight
Down 20-0 to start the game, Fort Hays State reeled off 31 unanswered points to defeat Nebraska-Omaha 31-20 at Lewis Field Stadium. C.J. Lovett had two key interceptions that led the Tigers to victory. Jacobb Irvin finished with a team-high 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Fort Hays State, and Mike Garrison threw for 198 yards, completing 16-of-29 passes with no interceptions.

A minute, 36 seconds remained in the first half when Missouri Western took over the ball at its 20 with a 13-point lead against Central Missouri. The Griffons initially took the conservative approach, giving three straight hand-offs to running back Thomas Hodges. Hodges moved the ball to the 41 and that was enough for Missouri Western to unleash its passing game again.

MIAA Football Wrap: Week Seven
Greg Wunderlich threw for 304 yards and tossed three touchdowns to help Nebraska-Omaha upset No. 12 Washburn 31-21 on Homecoming in front of 2,788 fans at Caniglia Field. The Mavericks racked up 427 yards of total offense, their third highest of the year. True freshman Levi Terrell finished the game with a 37 carries for 119 yards for Omaha, his third straight game of over 100 yards on the ground.

Levi Terrell had 192 yards rushing for the second consecutive week and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead Nebraska-Omaha to a 34-13 road victory over Emporia State.
