Howell, Kadey Tabbed Players of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sheldon Howell (Fort Hays State) and Oliver Kadey (Missouri Western) have been named MIAA Baseball Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 20-23, as selected by a conference SID panel.

MIAA BASEBALL HITTER OF THE WEEK
Sheldon Howell, SS, Fort Hays State
Howell had a tremendous series against Nebraska-Omaha hitting in the No. 8 spot in the lineup this past weekend in Hays. He went 11-for-15 at the plate with four extra-base hits (two triples, two doubles). He reached base in 13 of his 18 plate appearances. In the series opener with the Tigers down 7-1 against Joe Holtmeyer, he had a two-RBI triple to pull the Tigers to within four, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-4 in the fifth. In the sixth inning, his two-out single against Holtmeyer extended the inning to allow a three-run home run by Chris Santoscoy and three consecutive singles that plated another run to pull the Tigers to an 11-8 deficit, but the Tigers fell 17-8. In the 26-20 loss, he had an RBI single in the first inning, a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth, and an RBI single in the ninth. His single in the ninth brought the Tigers within three at 20-17 and set up another three-run home run by Santoscoy to tie the game at 20-20 and force extra innings. In the pair of wins Saturday, Howell failed to reach base just once in eight plate appearances. His RBI single in the second inning of the 6-4 win gave FHSU a 2-1 lead. With FHSU up 4-3 in the sixth, he drew a two-out walk, which set up Santoscoy for a two-RBI double that would be the decisive hit in the game. In the 17-7 win, he put the Tigers on the board in the second inning with an RBI double. With the score tied 5-5 in the sixth, he drew another two-out walk that would spark a five-run rally in the inning. He scored the go ahead run on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. With the Tigers up 10-7 in the seventh, he had a two-RBI triple to put FHSU back up by five. With an eight-run lead, his double in the eighth forced UNO to load the bases with an intentional walk and that led to the walk-off run-rule two-RBI single by Nash Smith. Howell scored the run that ended the game. Howell and Chris Santoscoy (8-for-16 in the series) combined to go 19-for-31 (.612) in the No. 8 and No. 9 slots in the lineup over the weekend. Howell set up Santoscoy's first two home runs of the season on Friday and his clutch double in the first game Saturday allowing Santoscoy to lead FHSU in RBI for the weekend with 11. The pair combined for 20 RBI in the series.
