Quick Start Backs Hosey, Hornets Win

(KANSAS CITY) – The ninth-ranked and third-seeded Emporia State Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead through three innings, and starter Jake Hosey ran his season-long record to 9-0, as ESU moved to Saturday (May 8) morning's winner's bracket championship game against Central Missouri with a 10-3 win against Fort Hays State on Friday night.
ESU (41-12) scored two in the first, then blew the game open
in the third with five runs on five hits, to knock Fort Hays
(31-21) starter Andy Lewton out of the game after just 2.2 innings.
FHSU scored two of its three runs on the evening in the bottom of
the third, but the Hornets tacked on single runs in the sixth,
seventh and eighth innings to pick up its second win at the 2010
MIAA tournament in as many days.
Kenny Burkhead and Kevin Wempe had two hits each, with Wempe
and Travis Whipple recording a pair of RBI. Hosey threw seven
innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out
three. Austin Anderson entered in relief, going two scoreless
innings for an ESU squad that will take on top-seeded Central
Missouri at 11 am on Saturday.
Nash Smith pounded out three hits and logged two RBI for the
Tigers, who will play Missouri Southern in an elimination game on
Saturday at 3 pm.
