Joplin, Mo. – Missouri Western got two runs in the top of the eighth inning to come from behind and eliminated Northwest Missouri 4-3 in the MIAA Baseball Championship.
The Bearcats got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as James Holler single through the left side driving home Garrett Fort. Alixon Herrera would follow that up with a single of his own scoring Landon Figg to give his team a 2-0 lead.
The Griffons would answer in the top of the second as Bailey Zimmer singled through the left side plating Levi Schreiner. Logan Marston would come to the plate next and drive in Andrew Curry with an RBI single tieing the game up.
NWMSU broke up the tie as Jay Hrdlicka and Kevin Hanzlik hit back-to-back doubles with pinch runner Tim Olson pinch running. The Griffons responded in the top of the eighth as Alex Heuring tripled to right center field driving in two and giving the MWSU the 4-3 lead.
Jared Lloyd pitched just one third of an inning in relief, but picked up the win while Richie Peoples close out the final two innings to pick up a save.
Missouri Western will turn around and face Central Oklahoma at 1 p.m. from Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Mo.
