Lincoln, Neb. – Top seeded Northwest Missouri advanced 5-0 over Emporia while third seed Washburn upset second seeded Southwest Baptist 5-2 in the semifinal round of the MIAA Men’s Tennis Tournament.
#1 Northwest Missouri 5, #4 Emporia State 0
Top seeded Northwest Missouri swept their way to a victory defeating fourth seeded Emporia State 5-0 in the opening round of the MIAA Men’s Tennis Tournament.
Northwest Missouri moved into the lead as at #3 doubles as Josef Altmann and Aymeric Autones earned an 8-3 win. They made it a two game lead at the #1 spot with Youssef Sherif and Mauro Tete earning an 8-6 victory. They would complete the sweep at #2 doubles as Sergi Fontcuberta and Romain Boissinot came from behind for a 9-7 win.
The Bearcats got within one point of clenching as Sergi Fontcuberta pulled out a 6-2, 6-2 win at the #2 singles spot. Romain Boissinot would close things out for NWMSU as he pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 win at the #1 singles spot.
The Bearcats will take on third seeded Washburn in the MIAA Championship at 9 a.m. on April 20 from the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
#3 Washburn 5, #2 Southwest Baptist 2
Washburn fell behind 2-1 after doubles, but stormed back winning four singles games to earn a 5-2 win.
Southwest Baptist jumped on top first as Sherif Abohabaga and Chris Blodig earned an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. They pushed that to a two game advantage as Raul Cabalero and Torben Semrau pulled out an 8-4 victory at #3 doubles. The Ichabods would grab a point back at #2 double as Tommy Hunter and Matt Barlow earned an 8-5 win.
Washburn started their comeback at #1 singles as Alejandro Valarezo Plaza earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. They took their first lead of the match as Matt Barlow earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at #3 singles. The Ichabods would get within one point of closing out the victory at #2 singles as Blake Hunter earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. WU closed things out at the #6 singles spot as Chase Brill earned a 6-2, 6-2 win.
The Ichabods will take on top seeded Northwest Missouri in the MIAA Championship at 9 a.m. on April 20 from the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
