Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney advanced with a 5-3 win over Northwest Missouri while sixth seeded Washburn upset third seed Central Oklahoma 5-3 in the opening round of the MIAA Women’s Tennis Tournament.
 
#6 Washburn 5, #3 Central Oklahoma 3
Sixth seeded Washburn was strong through doubles as they knocked off third seeded Central Oklahoma 5-3 in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament.
 
Washburn jumped on top first in the doubles as Madeline Hill and Jacqueline Engelbrecht earned an 8-0 tally at #1 doubles. They then built a 2-0 advantage as Madison Lysaught and Makenna Gonzales pulled out an 8-3 win at the #3 slot. The Ichabods would complete the sweep at the #2 doubles spot Ally Burr and Logan Morrissey earned an 8-5 victory.
 
The Bronchos would grab their first point of the match at #6 singles as Jenny Bond earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory. WU would get within one game of the win as Logan Morrissey earned the 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at #3 singles.  
 
The Bronchos would answer with a win at #5 singles by Emilie Semo who pulled out the 6-3, 6-3 tally. They would cut the lead to just one as Shali Schoepflin earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at #4 singles. Madeline Hill would close out the match for the Ichabods in the #1 slot earning  4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory.
 
Washburn will now face second seeded Southwest Baptist at 6 p.m. on April 19 from the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
 
#4 Nebraska-Kearney 5, #5 Northwest Missouri 3
Nebraska-Kearney went 2-1 in doubles and then held on through the singles for a 5-3 victory over Northwest Missouri in the opening round of the MIAA Women’s Tennis Tournament.
 
Nebraska-Kearney got the first tally of the match as Camryn Parnell and Ana Royo won 8-3 in the #1 doubles spot. The Lopers took a 2-0 lead as Emma Neil and Amanda Alvarez earned an 8-5 win at the #3 spot. In #2 doubles Northwest Missouri’s Aniek Kolen and Lorena Rivas Jarolim edged out a 9-7 win.
 
UNK pushed the lead to 3-1 in #3 singles as Amanda Alvarez pulled out a 6-0, 6-4 victory. NWMSU would answer at #5 singles with Margaux Jacquet earning a 6-1, 6-3 vicctory. The Bearcats would even things up in #2 singles as Aniek Kolen earned a 7-5, 6-2 win to knot things at three.
 
UNK would move back into the lead as Emma Neil earned a 6-3, 7-6 victory at the #4 slot. The Lopers then closed out the match as Ana Royo earned a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win at the #1 slot.
 
The Lopers will face off with top seeded Northeastern State at 6 p.m. on April 19 from the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
