Kansas City, Mo. -- The MIAA Wrestling Championships are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 12 hosted by four time defending tournament champion Nebraska-Kearney. Matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m. from Health and Sports Center with the championship round scheduled to get started around 2:30 p.m.
Team Capsules
Central Missouri
Central Missouri went 1-4 in duals this year with a win over Newman and went 5-9 overall in duals this season.
Wrestlers to watch: Bradley Irwin - The sophomore is 11-6 at 141 pounds this season, but has a team best 44 teams points scored.
Jesse Reser - At 165 pounds the freshman leads the team with a 23-5 record scoring 43 team points and also leading the way with a squad best eight pins.
Cody Carson - Carson has wrestled at both 174 and 184 pounds, mostly wrestling in the tournament format he has scored 22.5 points and added five pins.
Central Oklahoma
Central Oklahoma had climbed to #7 in the most recent national wrestling poll and last weekend wrapped up an MIAA regular season title going a perfect 5-0 against league foes and 18-0 overall. The Bronchos currently feature a line-up with four wrestlers ranked at their respective weight.
Wrestlers to watch: Josh Lindsey - The #6 wrestler at 125 pounds, Lindsey is 21-5 on the year with 10 pins and two major decisions.
Miguel Barreras -- The #8 wrestler at 174 pounds, Barreras is 32-6 with 11 pins and nine major decisions.
Greg Wilson - Wilson is coming off an upset of the #2 wrestler at 197 pounds and currenty sits in third himself with 27-4 overall record highlights by eight pins.
Caleb Cotter - The junior is ranked #4 in the heavyweight class where he is 24-3 with four pins.
Fort Hays State
Fort Hays State is ranked #16 in the nation according to the last poll and have three wrestlers currently ranked in their weight classes.
Wrestlers to watch: Brandon Ball - Ranked 10th at 141 pounds, he is 18-3 on the year scoring 69.5 points for his team with four major decisions and five pins.
Rakim Dean - Dean is 16-8 at 184 pounds with four pins and has scored 56.5 points for his squad.
Jon Inman - Ranked second in the nation at 197 pounds he is 14-2 on the year with 57.5 points scored.
Christian Lance - Ranked #9 at heavyweight, but coming off an upset of the #4 wrestler at that weight, he is 25-3 with a team best 83.5 points this season.
Lindenwood
Lindenwood went 3-2 in league duals this season and have three wrestlers currently ranked in their weight classes nationally.
Wrestlers to watch: Carlos Jacquez - Ranked #10 at 125 pounds he is 18-2 with 46 points scored and six pins.
Hunter Haralson - He is ranked #5 at 133 pounds where he is 17-7 with 33 team points scored.
Kyle Jolas - At 165 pounds in the nation’s #8 wrestler sporting a 22-6 record with four pins and three tech falls
Batchka Zulkluu - At 174 pounds has a 19-7 record with six pins on the year
Ronnie Gentile - He is 13-2 on the year at 149 pounds with three pins and 31 team points scored.
David Hamil - Ranked #12 at 184 pounds he is 15-3 on the year with 32 team points scored.
Nebraska-Kearney
The Lopers are ranked #2 in the country going 4-1 in league duals and 14-6 overall they have four wrestlers currently ranked in their weight class.
Wrestlers to watch: Bryce Shoemaker - He is 18-4 with five pins at 133 pounds this season.
Jacob Wasser - Ranked #11 at 141 pounds he is 26-4 on the season with three falls and three tech falls.
Destin McCauly - Ranked #2 at 157 pounds where he has a 25-4 record with ten pins.
Calvin Ochs - The junior is ranked #2 at 165 pounds witha 15-4 record and three technical falls
Zach Stodden - Ranked #8 at 184 pounds where he is 20-9 with two falls and two technical falls.
Kevin Barrett - Ranked #3 in the heavyweight class he is 26-4 with 15 pins on the year.
Newman
Newman went 0-5 in league duals this season, but currently sit ranked #19 in the national rankings with two wrestlers ranked.
Wrestlers to watch: Dustin Reed - Ranked #2 at 125 pounds, he is 13-2 and was 5-0 in MIAA duals with three pins.
Tyler Mies - Ranked eighth at 149 points he is 28-10 with a 5-0 record in MIAA duals and five pins.
Culton Duhr - Went 17-11 at 165 pounds with five pins on the year.
Kyle Ryan - Was 13-8 at 174 pounds with four pins and a 2-3 record in league duals.
Tournament Notes: The MIAA Championship will feature at least one nationally ranked wrestler in every weight class with six weight classes featuring multiple ranked wrestlers. At 197 pounds the wrestling will feature both the #2 and #3 wrestlers in the nation while in the heavyweight class the #3, #4 and #9 wrestlers will all take to the mat. Nebraska-Kearney has won the last four MIAA Tournament Championships and over that time frame have won 18 individual titles over those years. Central Oklahoma has the second most MIAA invidiual titles 10 while Fort Hays State is third with five individual championships. Lindenwood has three individual titles, Central Missouri and Newman have each claimed two championships since the MIAA Tournament began.
