Springfield, Mo. – Emporia State and Nebraska-Kearney each advanced with wins in the semi-final round of the MIAA Women’s Tennis Tournament.
ESU 5, UCO 1
Fifth seeded Emporia State used strong doubles performances to upset fourth seed Central Oklahoma and earn a spot in the MIAA Women’s Tennis Tournament semi-finals.
Emporia State opened the match with a 2-0 advantage due to a Central Oklahoma withdrawl. In #1 doubles Nicole Jara and Tawni Griffey of ESU dispatched Alina Gorina and Anna Braun by an 8-0 tally. In the #2 doubles matches Taylor Smith and Jenny Gerhardt earned an 8-2 victory.
Moving to singles ESU needed just one win, but UCO answered first as Alina Gorina defeated Nicole Jara 6-0, 6-3 in the #1 match. Somer Schmidt would then close out the match for ESU with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #5 singles.
Emporia State advances to face top seeded Northeastern State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 from Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
UNK 6, NWMSU 1
Nebraska-Kearney played strong at the top and bottom as they advanced to the semi-final round of the MIAA Women’s Tennis Tournament.
Vanessa Gunawan and Kari Emery got things going in #1 doubles for the Lopers earning an 8-2 victory. The #2 doubles was hotly contested as Emily Fink and Kristin Weems of UNK pulled out a 9-7 win. In was close at #3 as well with Paula Jimenez and Renee Hoekstra earning an 8-6 victory.
In singles Vanessa Gunawan won 6-2, 6-3 at #1 while Kristin Weems won 6-2, 6-3 at the #2 spot. On the bottom half Brittni Norfolk earned a 6-3, 6-1 tally at #5 and at #6 Kari Emery had a 6-0\1, 6-0 win.
Nebraska-Kearney will face Southwest Baptist at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26th from the Cooper Tennis Complex.
