League meet set for this weekend

Kansas City, Mo. -- The 2014 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are scheduled to get underway this weekend in Joplin, Mo.

The Meet
The MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held on February 28-March 2, 2014 at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center in Joplin, Mo. Central Missouri is the reigning MIAA men’s champion and Lincoln won last year’s women’s championship. Last year’s high point winner for the men was Laban Sialo of Central Missouri and for the women Sheri-Kaye Campbell of Lincoln won the award.

Pentathlon - The one day event will get underway for the women on Friday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. Central Missouri’s Erin Alewin has the nations fifth best score of 3,679 on the year which is an provisional qualifier to the National Championships. Madison Smith also of Central Missouri has the second best mark with 3,621 points which ranks her eighth nationally. Central Missouri also has the league’s third best mark which is 3,521 set by Victoria Jackson.

Heptathlon - The two day event for the men is scheduled to get underway for the men on Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m. The top mark in the league belongs to Nebraska-Kearney’s Dillon Schrodt who is an automatic qualifier with 5,269 points which ranks third in the nation. Payson Maydew of Emporia State scored 5,158 points which ranks him fifth nationally. Jeff Piepenbrink of Pittsburg State is sixth nationally with 5,034 points.

In the Field
Shot Put - The MIAA men’s shot put is scheduled to get underway on March 2 at around 10 a.m. Nebraska-Kearney’s Michael Thalken has a 57’ 7.5” throw at the Nebraska-Kearney Classic which ranks seventh in the nation and is a provisional qualifier. Bo Farrow of Pittsburg State is also provisionally qualified with a throw of 53’ 9.75” which ranks 20th nationally. Garrett Appier of Pittsburg State has a throw of 53’ 7.75” which is 25th in the nation.
The women’s shot put will be contested around 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. The current MIAA leader is Jackie Ziemke of Nebraska-Kearney with a throw of 50’ 3.5” which is fourth in the nation and automatically qualifies her for the National Championship. The second best throw in the league is that of Kylie Cornman who has a provisional qualifying throw of 49’ 2.25” which ranks seventh in the nation. Lekiesha McKnight of Northwest Missouri has the league’s third best throw at a distance of 48’ 6.75”.

Weight Throw - In the men’s weight throw the top distance of the year is tie between Pittsburg State’s Luke Wilson and Nebraska-Kearney’s Michael Thalken who each have throws of 57’ 3” on the year which ranks 31st in the nation. Cody Holland, also of Pittsburg State, has a throw of 55’ 0.25” at the 2014 Oklahoma Baptist Indoor Invitational.
In the women’s weight throw, which is slated for a 3:30 p.m. on March, Central Missouri’s Heavin Warner has a throw of 61’ 7.75” which is seven in the nation and provisionally qualified for the national meet. Kylie Cornman of Missouri Southern is also provisionally qualified with a throw of 57’ 3.5” on the season. The third best throw in the league this season belongs to Lindenwood’s Lindsey Blackwell who threw 55’ 9.75” at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge.

Pole Vault - The men’s pole vault is scheduled to begin around 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Pittsburg State’s Jeff Piepenbrink has the nation’s top mark at 17’ 1.5” qualifying him for the national championship automatically. Brady Melugin is also automatically qualified and third in the nation with a 16’ 9.25” vault. Michael Juergens of Missouri Southern has a vault of 16’ 5.25” which is sixth nationally.
In the women’s pole vault the event in scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. Lindenwood’s Claire Buckman has the league’s best vault and fourth best in the nation at 12’ 11.5” earlier this season. The second best mark this season belongs to Brooke Frederick who vaulted 12’ 4.75” for Nebraska-Kearney. Heather Glenn of Pittsburg State vaulted 12’ 3.5” for the third best mark in the MIAA coming into the post-season meet.

High Jump - The men’s high jump is schedule to get underway around 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 2. Central Missouri’s Devin Claypool has the league’s best mark at 6’ 11” which is 10th nationally. Jordan Manning of Emporia State also has a provisionally qualifying mark of 6’ 8.75” at the St. Cloud State Invitational. His teammate Samuel Saidi set the same mark at the Kansas State Open.
In the women’s high jump, which will get underway at 12 p.m. on March 2, Natalie O’Keefe of Southwest Baptist has a jump of 5’ 9.25” which is provisionally qualified and the sixth best mark in the country. Lacey Rhodes of Central Oklahoma has a jumped of 5’ 8.5” which comes in right behind O’Keefe at seventh nationally. Madison Smith of Central Missouri also jumped 5’ 8.5” during the pentathlon which also ranks her seventh in the country.

Triple Jump - The men’s triple jump is scheduled to go off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. Darion Boure of Missouri Southern has the best jump in the league this season of 49’ 7.25” which ranks fourth in the nation. Marquise Cushon of Pittsburg State has a jump of 48 4.75 Clark Tanksley of Missouri Southern has a jump of 47’ 6.25” for the league’s third best mark.
In the women’s triple jump Brittani Reagan of Missouri Southern has the best jump at 39’ 8” in the even that is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start on Saturday, March 1. Danielle Newman of Lincoln has a jump of 39’ 6.5” which provisionally qualifies her for the national meet. Her teammate Jonelle Campbell has a jump of 39’ 2.25” which is third best in the league.

Long Jump - The men’s long jump is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 2. Pittsburg State’s Keenan Soles has the top mark in the league, and best in the nation, jumping 25’ 8” to automatically qualify to nationals. Brady Land of Nebraska-Kearney had a jump of 24’ 4.5” which is the fifth best mark in the nation. Steven Mann of Pittsburg State jumped 23’ 10” at the Missouri Southern Lion Invitational for the leagu’es third best jump.
In the women’s long jump Lincoln’s Nickiesha Beaumont has a jump of 19’ 4” which is fifth nationally. Just behind her with a jump that is sixth nationally at 19’ 3.25” is Pittsburg State’s Ramie Grayson. The third best jump of the year at 18’ 10” belongs to Lincoln’s Shakiesha Miller. The event is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start on Sunday, Feb. 24.

On the Track
5,000m- The finals in the 5000m is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. start on March 1. Eric Schott of Missouri Southern ran the race in 14:36.70 at the Nebraska Tune Up which is the league’s top time and nation’s 12th best. Al Sanabria of Nebraska-Kearney set a pace of 14:37.58 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational for the MIAA’s second best time. Nolan Zimmer of Northwest Missouri ran a 14:48.41 at the Husker Invitational as well.
The women’s 5000m is scheduled for start on the track at 7:25  p.m. on March 1. Jessica Macy of Pittsburg State ran a 17:11.94 which is a provisional qualifier and ranks her 11th in the nation so far. Kaitlyn Belisle of Missouri Southern has the league’s second best time running the race in 17:40.15 which is the 28th best time nationally. Third best in the league is Southwest Baptist’s Ashley Wolkomir who ran 18:01.86 at the Nebraska Tune Up.

Distance Medley Relay - The men’s distance medley relay is scheduled for an 8:25 p.m. start on Saturday, March 1. Missouri Southern has the league’s top time with a 10:16.89 pace. Southwest Baptist has the second best time and Northwest Missouri has the third best time.
The women’s distance medley relay is scheduled for an 8:10 p.m. start on March 1. Lincoln has the nation’s 13th best time with an 11:57.59 at the DePauw Indoor Classic. Their “B” teams ran the race in 12:01.74 which is the nation’s 17th best time. Southwest Baptist has the league’s third best time at a 12:02.89 pace, 19th in the country.

Mile - The men’s mile run is scheduled for a 2:15 p.m. start on March 1. Adam Tredway of Central Missouri has the nation’s 13th best time with a 4:11.64 pace. Pittsburg State’s Adam Volkert has a 4:15.05 at the Missouri Southern Lion Invite for the MIAA’s second fastest time. Missouri Southern’s Andrew Webster ran a 4:17.84 which is the league’s third best time. 
The women’s mile run is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on March 2. Twishana Williams of Lincoln is currently ranked ninth in the nation with a 4:57.23 time. Elizabeth Luckel of Southwest Baptist has a time of 5:02.28 which is second in the league and Liz Damman of Nebraska-Kearney ran a 5:05.98 at the Nebraska Tune Up.

60H - The men’s 60m hurdles final is schedule to start off at 2:40 p.m. on the track on March 2. Dillon Schrodt of Nebraska-Kearney has the 13th best time in the nation running 8.07 at the Concordia Indoor Invite. Stallone Watson of Lincoln ran a 8.20 for the second best time and Kevin Brown of Lindenwood has the third best time.
The women’s 60m hurdles final is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Ladonna Richards of Lincoln has the nation’s fourth best time running 8.45 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Juneille Barker of Lincoln is the second fastest in the league with an 8.49 time which ranks eighth in the nation. Nikki Wetstein of Emporia State is ninth in the nation with an 8.56 time at the Central Missouri Invite.

60m - The men’s 60m final is scheduled to start on the track at 2:50 p.m. on a. The MIAA has the nation’s three top times, all of which are automatic national qualifiers. Romel Lewis of Lincoln ran a 6.66 at Grand Valley State for the nation’s top time. Deneko Brown of Southwest Baptist has a 6.70 and Jeff Fraley of Missouri Southern has a 6.71 in what should be a closely contest race.
The women’s 60m final is scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. start on the track on March 2. Latoya King of Lincoln is provisionally qualified for nationals with a 7.45 mark which ranks third in the nation. Yanique Ellington of Lincoln has the nation’s sixth best time with a 7.51 mark. Kimberly Bailey of Lincoln as the nationa’s 16th best time running a 7.65 at the Illini Classic.

400m - The men’s 400m race is scheduled for a 3:10 start on March 1. William Shell of Southwest Baptist has the nation’s third best time running 47.35 at the Jayhawk Classic. Michael Ashley of Lincoln is 10th in the nation with a 48.31 mark. Eli Smith of Northwest Missouri ran a 49.23 at the Bob Timmons Challenge for the third best time.
The women’s 400m race is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on Sunday, March 2. Donna-Lee Hylton of Lincoln is provisionally qualified for the national championships with a time 55.86 which ranks her third in the nation. Emma Shell of Southwest Baptist is ranked eighth in the nation with a time of 56.46 time at the Jayhawk Classic. Amber White of Missouri Southern has the third best time in the league of 56.73 which is 13th in the nation.

600 yard - The men’s 600 yard race is scheduled to fire off at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. The 600y is not a national championship event, however Kellin Loch of Central Missouri ran a 1:12.84 at the Mule Relays. Paul Pape of Nebraska-Kearney ran a 1:12.94 for the second best time in the league. The third fastest time on the heat sheet belongs to Jermaine Blake of Lincoln. 
The women’s 600 yard is slated for a 3:20 p.m. start on Sunday, March 2. Stephanie Hutsell has the top time in the league with a 1:24.76 mark. Her teammate Marissa Bongers ran the race in 1:24.80 which is second in the league. The third best time belongs to Lovan Palmer of Lincoln who set a 1:24.93 pace at the Jayhawk Classic.

800m - The men’s 800m run final is scheduled for a 3:35 p.m. on Sunday, March 2. Paul Pape of Nebraska-Kearney ran a 1:53.76 which is good for 18th in the nation. Kellin Loch of Central Missouri finished race in 1:53.82 at the Grand Valley State Big Meet for second in the league. Lincoln’s Jermaine Blake has the nation’s 24th best time with a 1:53.99 pace. 
The MIAA women’s 800m run is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the final day of the conference meet. Marissa Bongers of Nebraska-Kearney ran a 2:10.17 which automatically qualifies her for the national meet and is third in the nation. Elizabeth Luckel of Southwest Baptist has a time of 2:12.78 which is sixth in the nation and second in the league. Monique Thompson of Lincoln ran a 2:12.91 which is seventh in the nation so far.

200m - The men’s 200 meters will run off at 3:50 p.m. on the last day of the MIAA Indoor Championships. Jeff Fraley of Missouri Southern ran a 21.63 at the Missouri Southern Lion Invite which is the third best time in the nation and automatically qualifies him for the national meet. Lincoln’s Romel Lewis ran a 21.86 which is the nation’s eighth best time. William Shell of Southwest Baptist set the nation’s ninth best time with a 21.87 pace.
The women’s 200 meter dash is scheduled for a 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. Yanique Ellington of Lincoln has the nation’s fifth best time at a 24.43 pace. Her teammate Donna-Lee Hylton has the nation’s 11th best time at 24.93 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Janae Johnson also of Lincoln ran the same time at the Hoosier Hills.

3000m - The men’s 3000m run is scheduled for a 4:25 start on the final day of the MIAA Indoor Championship. Adam Volkert of Pittsburg State has the 15th best time in the nation running an 8:23.46 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Cory Keehn of Fort Hays State ran an 8:29.94 at the Bill Easton Classic for the league’s second best time. The third best time in the league belongs to Kevin Carder of Nebraska-Kearney.
The women’s 3000m run is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start on Sunday, March 1. Jessica Macy of Pittsburg State ran a 9:55.91 which is 16th in the nation and provisionally qualified. Twishanna Williams of Lincoln is also provisionally qualified with a 10:02.94 time. The third best time belongs to Kaitlyn Belisle at 10:08.52 at the Nebraska Tune Up.

4x400 Relay - The men’s 4x400 relay will close out the MIAA Indoor Championships with a scheduled start time of 5:05 p.m. The Lincoln men has the fastest time in the league and the nation’s ninth fastest with a 3:17.12 at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Southwest Baptist set the league’s second fastest pace running at 3:17.59 at the Jayhawk Classic. Central Missouri ran a 3:18.58 at the Grand Valley State Big Meet which is the MIAA’s third best time.
The women’s 4x400 relay will be the second to last event of the MIAA Indoor Championships scheduled to get underway at 4:50 p.m. Lincoln has the nation’s fastest time of 3:44.57 which is automatically qualified to the national championships. Lincoln relay teams have the top three times in the league, but the next closest team is Central Missouri who ran a 3:51.63 at the Grand Valley State Big Meet which is 13th in the nation. Lindenwood has the third fastest team time in the league with a 3:52.11 at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge which ranks 15th in the nation.
