The Missouri Western softball team fell in a close extra inning battle in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional against Texas Woman's University. The Pioneers scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth earning the 4-3 victory. The Griffons fall to 42-12 with the loss. Western will play the loser of Angelo State and St. Edwards University in an elimination game tomorrow at 4:30 pm.

The slipper finally fits, again. For the first time in 20 years, the Pittsburg State Gorillas returned to the pinnacle of NCAA Division II football. A perennial power, Pitt State annually battled for supremacy in Division II but the last three chances the Gorillas had for national championships in Alabama came up painfully close but short in 1992, 1995 and 2004.

The inaugural season for Fort Hays State men's and women's soccer began on Saturday, September 3 at the brand new FHSU Soccer Stadium, part of the new multi-million dollar Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex in Hays, Kan. After a handful of exhibition games at the stadium in late August, the first official games took place as the men hosted Adams State College and the women hosted Newman University.

ESU Football Assists Girl's Fight Against Cancer
Football teams across the country have a reputation of using rather colorful language on the field. The Emporia State University football team spent part of their training camp trying to correct this and help a young girl in her battle with leukemia. The Hornets raised $1,509.44 in the first ten days of training camp for Mikala Hodgens, the nine-year old niece of defensive coordinator Bryce Saia.

Joplin on the Road to Recovery
May 22, 2011 is a day that no person that calls Joplin home will soon, or for that matter, ever forget. At approximately 5:41 pm on that Sunday evening, what would turn out to be the deadliest tornado recorded in the history of the United States, touched down just south of downtown Joplin and proceeded to level much of the city.

Fall Classic All-Decade Teams Announced
Following a month-long fan vote, Northwest Missouri and Pittsburg State announced Wednesday the results of the Fall Classic All-Decade Teams. Fans were given the chance to vote for their favorite players from the previous nine meetings between Northwest and Pitt State at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Pittsburg State, the 2010 MIAA champion, and Missouri Southern, last season’s runner-up, share the honor of preseason No. 1 in the 2011 women’s cross country coaches poll, the conference office announced Monday. Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State garnered three first-place votes apiece as both accumulated 57 points to tie for the top spot.

Fort Hays State trailed Central Oklahoma by 22 with 13:39 remaining, but the Tigers dug deep with the fight they have shown all year to rally all the way back and tie the game at the 4:30 mark. However, a 3-point field goal by Central Oklahoma's Victor Driver snapped the Tigers' momentum and the Bronchos hit free-throws down the stretch to win the game 81-69.
