KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri defeated Washburn, 5-2, Sunday at Clayview Country Club to win the 2010 MIAA Men's Tennis Tournament Championship.

The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead into the singles matches, where they won three of four completed matches to take home the title.

Northwest, which had a first-round bye after earning the No. 1 seed through draw, defeated Truman and then Washburn to win the tournament championship. Northwest, Washburn and Southwest Baptist shared the regular season championship.

No. 2 seed Washburn defeated top seed Northwest Missouri 5-3 Sunday at Clayview Country Club to claim the 2010 MIAA Women's Tennis Tounament Championship.

The match was 4-3 in favor of Washburn as the No. 2 and No. 6 singles matches were both pushed into the third set, and the Lady Blues closed the deal as WU's Morgan Rainey outlasted NWMSU's Lisa Pendrak, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.

Washburn won two of the three doubles matches, and three of five completed singles matches to win the title. 

The Lady Blues' road to the championship went through No. 7 seed Fort Hays State, No. 6 seed Emporia State and finally No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri.

No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri defeated No. 4 seed Truman, and No. 3 seed Washburn defeated No. 2 seed Souhwest Baptist Sunday in the semifinals of the 2010 MIAA Men's Tennis Championship to advance to the championship match this afternoon. Northwest and Washburn will face off at approximately 3:15 p.m.

The women's championship match between No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri and No. 2 seed Washburn is underway.

Sunday's MIAA Tennis Championship matches are being played at Clayview Country Club, located at 7990 N. Farley Ave., Kansas City, Mo., 64158.

Day one of the 2010 MIAA Tennis Championships is in the books, as matches were completed at three different locations Saturday.

The first women's match was completed at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, but rain forced the action to Clayview Country Club, where the men's and women's first rounds were completed. The women's semifinals were played at the St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club in St. Joseph, Mo.

In the women's semifinal matches, top seed Northwest Missouri defeated No. 5 seed Nebraska-Omaha, 5-1, and No. 2 seed Washburn took down No. 6 Emporia State, 5-1, to set up a Sunday showdown between the top two seeds for the championship. The Bearcats and Lady Blues will match up at approximately 11:30 a.m. at Clayview Country Club.

In the men's first round, No. 4 seed Truman downed No. 5 seed Nebraska-Omaha, 5-1, and No. 3 seed Washburn beat No. 6 seed Emporia State, 5-0. Truman moves on to face No. 1 seed Northwest Missouri in one semifinal, while Washburn will take on No. 2 seed Southwest Baptist in the other. The men's semifinals are set for 9 a.m. Sunday morning at Clayview Country Club.
