MIAA Roundup: December 15, 2011
For the seventh time in eight years, the MIAA will be
represented in the NCAA Division II Football National Championship
Game.
Pittsburg State dismantled Delta State, 49-23, to punch its first
national title game ticket since 2004 and fourth overall in
Division II. The Gorillas won the 1991 national championship,
defeating Jacksonville State by a score of 23-6. Here is a story from the Sports Illustrated

Saturday’s championship game between Pitt State and Wayne
State (Mich.) will be nationally televised on ESPN2, and will also
be streamed on ESPN3 (http://espn.go.com/espn3/index?id=320340). Kickoff is
set for 10:05 a.m. CT. Pam Ward will handle the play-by-play call
with Dan Hawkins serving as color analyst and Carol Capuano serving
as sideline reporter.
Saturday will complete the fall season, and several MIAA standouts
have been honored with postseason awards.
Football
Five MIAA football players were named to the 2011 AFCA
Division II Coaches’ All-America Team. Washburn quarterback
Dane Simoneau, Missouri Southern defensive lineman Brandon
Williams, Northwest Missouri linebacker Chad Kilgore, Pittsburg
State linebacker Nate Dreiling and Missouri Western kicker Greg
Zuerlein all earned spots on the team. For the complete AFCA team,

Simoneau, Zuerlein and Dreiling were also named All-America by
Daktronics, and were joined on the first team by fellow MIAA stars
David Cannon (TE, Central Missouri), Rod Williams (OL, Northwest
Missouri), John Brown (RS, Pittsburg State), David Bass (DL,
Missouri Western) and Alex Whitehill (Fort Hays State).
Three from the MIAA were named second team All-Americans,
including Northwest Missouri offensive lineman Cody Johnson,
Northwest Missouri linebacker Chad Kilgore and Fort hays State
punter Ethan Kosjer.
In addition to those named to the All-America teams, 10 other MIAA
football players were selected to the All-Super Region 4 Team by
Daktronics. Washburn offensive lineman Brian Folkerts, Central
Missouri wide receiver Jamar Howard, Missouri Southern defensive
lineman Brandon Williams, and Pittsburg State defensive back Elijah
Olabode were named to the first team. Washburn wide receiver DeJuan
Beard, Missouri Western running back Michael Hill, Northwest
Missouri return specialist Jordan Simmons, Pittsburg State
defensive lineman Gus Toca, Northwest Missouri defensive back Bryce
Enyard, and Emporia State defensive back Derek Lohmann were
second-team selections.

Volleyball
Seven MIAA volleyball players, including four named to
the first team, were named 2011 AVCA All-Americans. The Central
Missouri trio of Julia Bates (setter), Paula Harris, (middle
hitter) and Allie Huffman (outside hitter), along with Washburn
outside hitter Breanna Lewis, were first-team selections.
Truman middle hitter Megan Sharpe was named to the second team,
while Washburn middle hitter Jessica Fey and Central Missouri
middle hitter Bradye Peniston received honorable mention. The

The seven aforementioned All-Americans were joined on the
All-South Central Region team by Washburn middle hitter Mollie
Lacy, who earned honorable mention honors. Central Missouri head
coach Flip Piontek was named the region’s coach of the year.

Harris and Huffman (second team) along with Bates (third team)
were honored as All-American by Daktronics, as well. The complete

Huffman was named the South Central Region’s Player of the
Year by Daktronics, and was joined on the all-region team by Bates
(first team), Harris (first team), Lewis (second team) and Lacy
(second team).
Soccer
Central Missouri midfielder Alyssa Rhodes was named a
second team All-American by Daktronics.
Rhodes was an All-South Central Region First Team selection, and
was joined on the first team by Central Missouri teammate Jenna
Stones (defender). Truman midfielder Megan Buri and Central
Missouri defender Kelsie Hanson were named to the second team.

Rhodes was also named first-team all-region by the NSCAA. Buri and
Truman teammate Kelsey Twellman (forward) were second-team
selections, while Stones and Hanson along with Central Missouri
teammate Carly Stanley (midfielder), Truman forward Olivia Hayes
and Northwest Missouri forward Tammie Eiberger earned third-team
honors.
Cross Country
Central Missouri’s Laban Sialo and Pittsburg
State’s Adam Volkert were named 2011 USTFCCCA Division II
Men’s Cross Country All-Americans, while Missouri
Southern’s Marlee Tegenkamp was named a 2011 USTFCCCA
Division II Women’s Cross Country All-American. A complete

Sialo and Volkert were joined as men’s all-region selections
by Dalton Moberly (Central Missouri), Alex Hendee (Fort Hays
State), Andrew Webster (Missouri Southern), Eric Schott (Missouri
Southern), Jacob Benton (Missouri Southern), T.R. Pursell
(Northwest Missouri), Ryan Darling (Northwest Missouri), Cody Smith
(Southwest Baptist) and Joey Walls (Truman).
Tegenkamp was accompanied on the women’s all-region team by
Emporia State’s Katie Mona, Lincoln’s Twishana
Williams, Missouri Southern’s Rachel Schrader, Northwest
Missouri’s Angela Adams and Katti Carroll, Pittsburg
State’s Melissa Peden and Kaley Temaat, Southwest
Baptist’s Briana Watson, as well as Truman’s Karen
Grauel and Cindy Grauel.
